Dr Rao is a senior Obstetrician & Gynaecologist with more than two decades of experience. His clinical philosophy has the patient at its centre, informed and empowered to participate in joint decision making. Dr Rao provides reassuring guidance and support, always advocating in the patient’s best interests and using language free of medical jargon.
He is a highly skilled gynaecological surgeon and is accredited to perform advanced laparoscopic, hysteroscopic, vaginal and open surgeries.
As an obstetrician, he is passionate about personalised pregnancy care, with a special interest in high-risk pregnancies such as twins and gestational diabetes. He has delivered thousands of babies worldwide, some even named after him. Whilst championing vaginal birth, Dr Rao strongly believes that every mother should have the option to choose their preferred mode of delivery, including Caesarean Section.
Background and Training
Dr Rao received his specialist training in O&G in Australia, United Kingdom and Malaysia. He holds specialist qualifications from Australia (FRANZCOG), United Kingdom (FRCOG) and Malaysia (NSR-O&G).
Prior to moving to Perth, he spent 3 years training in advanced gynaecology, laparoscopy & cancer surgery and 1 year in advanced obstetrics (maternal-fetal medicine) at the world-renowned Royal Hospital for Women, Sydney.
Originally from Malaysia, he went to Indonesia under the Prime Minister of Malaysia patronage, where he completed his medical school with an additional honours’ degree. Postgraduate training was in England and Scotland through a British Council Sponsorship.
His proudest moment was being the recipient of the inaugural Prime Minister of Australia Endeavour Award in 2010 to pursue sub-specialised O&G training in Sydney and doctoral research in Human Papilloma Virus at the University of New South Wales. As a specialist in women’s health, it was particularly meaningful to receive this award from the office of Australia’s first female Prime Minister.
Dr Rao currently has a public hospital appointment as Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at the Women & Newborn Health Services of Western Australia which includes Osborne Park Hospital and King Edward Memorial Hospital. Private patients will be seen in his rooms and operated either at Glengarry Private Hospital or Sundew Day Surgery.
