Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy or keyhole surgery utilises a small camera to perform operations though 3-4 holes not wider than a little finger through the tummy. Entire organs such as the uterus or the ovary can be removed laparoscopically, as well as removal of other gynaecological abnormalities such as ovarian cysts or fibroids. Key benefits of keyhole surgery are smaller scar, less pain and quicker recovery. Sometimes it can even be performed as a day procedure where patients can go home on the same day. Laparoscopy can be for diagnostic purposes only such as establishing tubal patency in subfertility or investigating the cause of chronic pain. The Australian Gynaecological Endoscopy & Surgery Society (AGES) has produced some informative videos for the public about laparoscopy.
