Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy or removal of the uterus can be performed by keyhole surgery, vaginal surgery or abdominal (open) surgery. Laparoscopic hysterectomy leaves minimal scars as opposed to open surgery, whereas vaginal hysterectomy leaves no visible scar. The most suitable method will be chosen according to the patient’s circumstances. Usually, hysterectomy is reserved as the last resort when conservative management did not achieve the desired outcome. Hysterectomy is a common surgical procedure performed for various reasons, including fibroids, adenomyosis, prolapse, menorrhagia unresponsive to other treatments, or cancer. It does not induce menopause unless the ovaries are also removed, which is typically avoided unless the patient is over 65. Removal of the Fallopian Tubes is simultaneously performed as it is shown to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer up to 30%. The cervix is typically removed, except in cases of sub-total hysterectomy. It is important to note that hysterectomy is a major surgery and we will discuss it in detail with you if you require it. The Australian Gynaecological Endoscopy & Surgery Society (AGES) has produced some informative videos for the public about hysterectomies.
