Pregnancy is not a disease, and neither is childbirth. Medical care is designed to provide support in pregnancy and childbirth to achieve the most optimal outcome. Most pregnancies are low risk but less than 10 per cent do have conditions which will make their pregnancy high risk. High blood pressure in pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes and carrying twins are examples of high-risk pregnancy. At Perth Gynae & Maternity Centre, we have the expertise to manage all types of pregnancies.
Global consensus among professional bodies recommend that vaginal birth is the preferred mode of delivery. There are no one-size fits-all solution in medicine. Whilst emergencies may occur and we have a duty of care to ensure the safest solution is provided, we are also committed to support you in your decision regarding your preferred mode of delivery. Respecting the autonomy of your choices, we will provide all the information you need to arrive at your decision. As part of this process, we will have discussions in the weeks preceding your delivery. These discussions will address various aspects of pregnancy and labour.
