Hysteroscopy, Uterine Curettage & Endometrial Ablation
Abnormality inside the uterus may cause abnormal vaginal bleeding. Direct visualisation using a camera (hysteroscopy) to obtain a sample of the uterine lining (uterine curettage) is commonly performed to determine the cause and aid management plan. In cases of heavy periods which is not responding to conservative measures, “burning” the lining of the uterus with heat can be tried prior to a hysterectomy. This procedure is called endometrial ablation and has a good success rate. All these can be performed as a day surgery procedure. The Australian Gynaecological Endoscopy & Surgery Society (AGES) has produced some informative videos for the public about these procedures.
